DON'T OVERLOOK YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CALIFORNIA DEMOCRATIC PARTY

January 14, 2007 is a critical day for progressives in California. Every odd numbered year, 12 delegates from each Assembly District (6 men and 6 women) are elected to represent their AD on the Democratic State Central Committee.

One of the 12 delegates is then elected to the Executive Board of the DSCC. The DSCC is comprised of approximately 3000 Democrats, some elected and some appointed. The Executive Board is comprised of approximately 300 people including elected state officials as well as appointed and elected individuals. For complete details, please review the CDP by-laws here.

So what does a delegate do, and why should you consider the position? Here's what the DSCC does:

"This Committee <DSCC> shall elect state officers of the Party and members of the Democratic National Committee, shall adopt a State Party platform in gubernatorial years and may adopt a proposed national platform in presidential election years, shall conduct campaigns for the party and its candidates for public office, shall appoint committees and employ staff as deemed desirable, and shall conduct such other business as the policy and program of the Party may require.

This Committee may endorse partisan primary elections and may take positions on ballot measures."

The DSCC helps decide how the California Democratic Party conducts business, who and what it endorses, and what the Party stands for.  As a DSCC delegate, you are required to attend the Democratic Party State Conventions that occur once a year in April. Because this is a two year term, you have to attend two conventions, one in April of 2007, one in April of 2008.  The meetings alternate between Northern and Southern California. If you would like to run for a position on the Executive Board (EBoard) you must be elected as a delegate first. If you are elected to the EBoard, you are required to attend four quarterly EBoard meetings around California each year.

Now is the opportunity to let the progressive voice roar within the California Democratic Party.  We are encouraging our members to partner with other progressives in their Assembly Districts to run for delegate positions and for EBoard positions. If you are unsure what Assembly District you are in, you can find out at www.vote-smart.org. If you are interested in running for a delegate position in your AD, and would like more information, please contact: Jo Olson at:  chocojo@sbcglobal.net

We will do our best to connect you to other progressive minded individuals who are also interested in running for delegate positions in your area.
